What’s One Road One Belt
The One Belt One Road is an initiative by President Xi Jinping of China in 2013. In summary there are 2 main components to this initiative, the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The main intention of this initiative is to enhance trade and political relation amongst China, Europe and ASEAN region.
Opportunities for Singapore – China is Singapore’s top trading partner. Given Singapore’s roots as a regional financial and trading hub, Singapore stands to benefit from this initiative by allowing business to operate out of Singapore and tap on growth opportunities in the region. Along side, the initiative will enhance Infrastructure and Logistics Industry, Tourism Industry, Clean Energy Industry and lastly Financial and Professional Services.
Benefits to ASEAN Region – Even though South East Asia is rich in resources, it lacks construction funds to develop its infrastructure and suffer from low levels of industrial developments and other issues. Hence, strengthening the infrastructure of the ASEAN countries would allow such resources to be tapped on. Which results in better facilitation of trade and investment within South East Asia.
